A public museum outdoors, Orchard Road in Singapore often becomes a venue for showcasing various works of art. The art is new and refreshing, because they don't stay for long. On one night weeks back I was strolling with my wife, and couldn't help but take photos of this particular display set in front of Ion and Wisma Atria.
The figurative sculptures were the work of Richard Macdonald, 1964, USA. And the display was organized by Opera Gallery.
Why do people create works of art and beauty? Some through sculptures, some through paintings or drawings. Yet others through literature, or product design. And then why do we look at these creations and say "this is great!"?
We get a glimpse of the answers in Genesis, in the Bible.
In Genesis 1 it says "God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the cattle according to their kinds, and all the creatures that creep along the ground according to their kinds. God saw that it was good.".
Also... "God created humankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them, male and female he created them." (Genesis 1:25, 27 NET)
Man was created in God's likeness (v.26)! And so as God created, then stood back to appreciate his creation, we follow this pattern when we too, make various works of art and appreciate them.
So the next time you stand in front of a beautiful creation, remember the God of the Bible!!
PS. If we are God's creation, does that mean we are all children of God? That we will all go to heaven? The answer which might surprise you, is NO. This is clearly stated in the Bible. See John 1:12 "Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God." So, not everyone is a child of God. But that right belongs to those who did receive Jesus Christ, who believed in His name!
The good news however, is that there is an open invitation to become a child of God. John 3:16 says "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." Catch the "whoever"!
And if you don't feel you're such a wonderful creation, then check this out. All things are possible to one who takes God's word seriously!
"Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come". (2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB)
Be a new creation!
