Fujians: The Blue Ocean Legacy; Ancient shipbuilding explored

A visit to Marina Bay Sands and The Shoppes is a must-do activity when you're in Singapore. And while there, go to the ArtScience Museum at The Marina Bay Sands. On display until April 14, 2013 is The Art of the Brick, not to be missed for the young-at-heart art-lover.

Running in parallel until February 20, 2013 is Fujians: The Blue Ocean Legacy. This showcases rare, ancient artefacts with over a thousand years of Chinese history. The exhibit is for those who enjoy glimpses into ancient history, culture and way of life, and appreciate commonplace articles as well as choice art expressions that have passed through the corridor of time.

As would be expected from the title, there is a display of seafaring vessels developed and used by the Fujians.

A fascination for ships is a common vein in many museums of history. I was recently at the Ayala Museum in the Philippines (accessible via Greenbelt Malls in Makati City and is a must-visit place to gain insights into Philippine history and heritage. I enjoyed their exhibit on century-old Philippine embroideries, gave me deeper appreciation of the culture and artistry in cloth, and the exhibit on Philippine ancestral gold is impressive) and the museum also has a display of early sea-faring vessels.

Now if you are interested in ships from antiquity, you should watch this video Noah's Ark, Thinking Outside the Box, available for purchase and immediate download at the Answers in Genesis website.

The video explains how the dimensions of the ark as specified in the Bible make the ship seaworthy, being comparable to modern-day ship proportions, and physical models were tested to validate their seaworthiness.

Here is an interpretation of the ark, based on the Biblical dimensions.

The design of the ark draws from what is known of early ship designs, which could have drawn insights from the original ark.

It is fascinating to realize that based on the years that Noah lived after the flood, he would have taught and influenced several generations after, undoubtedly passing on skills in shipbuilding.

The video also demonstrates how the building techniques and materials of that time could have built such a huge and sturdy ship, capable of withstanding rough waves during the global flood.

A number of people believe the story of Noah was a fable. But the Bible talks of Noah's ark and the global flood as historical fact, a turning point in the history of man, changing the face of the Earth for people from that point onwards. Seeing the early ships in museums should draw us to be more curious to this fact.

-----

On a deeper note, the global flood of Noah's day was a physical and spiritual judgement on all of mankind because of man's cruelty and for not seeking after God. Every man, woman and child perished, including all birds and land animals, save for those who were secure in the ark. This flood also laid down the mud layers that turned to sedimentary rocks that today cover the planet, along with the animals and reptiles (dinosaurs) that turned to fossils within those layers.
The Bible talks about a coming judgement. Will you be ready? The ark was a type, foreshadowing the coming of Jesus Christ, and salvation by faith in Him.

If you find all these incredulous, then you need to read more. Check out the evidences, and the explanations, and judge for yourself whether it is more sound to believe in the God of the Bible, or to accept the explanations of men who, refusing to accommodate the existence of God, have developed naturalistic explanations for all things. Find answers at the Answers in Genesis website.

Blessings on your journeys!
