Taaleña is a wonderful place to dine when you're looking for sumptuous Filipino food, in a place where you can chill away from the crowds, and enjoy the cool breeze and the lake view that are signatures of Tagaytay.
Taaleña restaurant is built like one of the "bahay-na-bato" centuries-old houses that hail from the Spanish era in the Philippines, with adobe stone walls and capiz shell windows, and it has an amazing view of Taal lake and the island with Taal volcano.
Popular Filipino dishes are served here, from main courses like bulalo (a hearty beef shank soup with bone, a must try for foreigner guests), bagnet (which is like a a small chunk of crispy pata), grilled salmon, grilled maliputo (a big, tasty fish only caught in Taal), sinigang (tasty tangy tamarind based soup) of fish or pork, tawilis (a small fish from fried so crispy you can eat it whole), plus many others.
Filipino desserts include halo-halo, a rich combination of sweetened fruits and beans and ice topped with leche flan, ube (sweet purple yam) and ice cream. Also not to be missed is the suman as lihia, which is a sweet rice dessert with coconut milk served with a thick caramelized coconut milk sauce.
When dining, many people choose to sit along the veranda which provides excellent views to Taal lake and the volcano island, and which can get very breezy and chilly. We were there just last Saturday evening, so on a typical night in June, the temperature felt like 20 degrees centigrade, enough for people to reach for light sweaters after sitting in the veranda for a while.
Taaleña is a large place that can host a wedding reception. And perhaps even a garden wedding at the spacious backyard. You can let your young kids enjoy running around before dinner, so they enjoy the food even better.
Here is the beautiful view of Taal Lake and the volcano island from the veranda of Taaleña. There's a small hut where you can sit while enjoying the fresh air.
Photo ops will not be missed, of course! Here is my lovely wife showing how to have a photo taken from Taaleña.
And here is one of the friendly restaurant staff bringing me a cup of Batangas brewed coffee while we were at the hut, just chilling while waiting for our friends to arrive.
Looking for a quiet place to enjoy great Filipino food and the Tagaytay scenery? Check out Taaleña. It is conveniently located close to the Tagaytay rotunda, in the direction towards Alfonso and Nasugbu.
Have you visited Taaleña? How was your experience? Leave a comment if you enjoyed it.
Taaleña is near the rotunda, and you will get to it before reaching the Cliff House, right after Tootsies. You can find Taaleña on Google Maps.
If you enjoy centuries-old architecture, why not visit the small town of Taal, Batangas. A day trip to this town is like walking back into history, to the Philippines of a couple centuries back. Check out the Taal Heritage town from this link.
