Greenery, Peace and Quiet At The Heart Of Makati, Philippines

Too busy at work and need a breather plus a change of scenery? Why not take a 15-minute stroll at Urdaneta park, right at the heart of Makati.

I was surprised to see such a lush green patch central to much of the office towers along Ayala Avenue, Makati Avenue and Paseo De Roxas. This is Urdaneta Park, right at the heart of Ayala Triangle, and accessible to much of Makati. All too often, people are much too busy to take more than a passing notice of this park. I, too have worked in Makati over 10 years, with the freedom of schedule to move around, but I had not discovered this place until recently.

The discovery came from having a series of trips to Tower One of Exchange Plaza, where our stock broker's office is, to actualize returns from fruitful investments made by my Dad many years prior (Thank God for prudent fathers! What a blessing.). For me, this verse is true:

House and riches are the inheritance from fathers, but a wise, understanding, and prudent wife is from the Lord. [Prov. 18:22.] (Proverbs 19:14 AMP)

And like my Dad (and Mom!) did for me, I'd like to do the same for my kids. I'd guess that all fathers would want to do the same!

Back to Urdaneta Park, it would be great if you have the ability, to take a stroll before making a major decision, before sending off a sensitive letter, or before finalizing a commitment. Walks in a garden can truly renew your mind, refresh your perspective, make you see things from a different light. Don't make big decisions when you're emotional (happy, excited, sad or angry), and don't rush into big decisions.

But talking about rushing, DON'T GO to Urdaneta Park during the lunch hour as the restaurants along the sides will be full with office people noisily chatting and zipping by. The best times would be in the afternoon when the park will be mostly devoid of crowds and even the cafés and restaurants will want your patronage.

Why do parks and trees and gardens bring peace and serenity? Perhaps they're simply beautiful, a work of art in nature, sculpted by gardeners and landscapers. Perhaps they remind us of the slow passing of time, that all is well after all, that life is more than just the rush to accumulate things and the endless pursuit of whatever. Perhaps they conjure images in our minds of Adam and Eve in the Garden, in their uncomplicated state, in fellowship with God, able to walk and talk with Him unpretentiously in the cool of the day.

Here are two Bible verses that talk about trees in a good way:

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers. (Psalm 1:1-3 NIV)

The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, proclaiming, “The Lord is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.” (Psalm 92:12-15 NIV)

If we contemplate these verses as we stroll amidst a garden, and especially as we seek to live out these verses, then surely we can draw peace and enjoy serenity while the world busily spins around us.
