The feature and technology-rich, compact and yet, professional-feel Leica D Lux Tyoe 109 is available in Singapore at a good price of SGD 1,880 for the bundle set with the half leather case.
With the full case bundle, you just add a little and pay SGD 1,930 for the full grain calf leather in the classic light Leica shade. I recommend you get the full leather case even if you think at first you won't need it. It's a very functional case, it's very easy and quick to get the camera when you need it, and fully protects your investment in fine camera equipment from light bumps. Also, buying the case separately later in will cost you almost SGD 200! Plus, it's a beautiful case and adds to the Leica appeal and recognizability!
If you're buying the full leather case bundle in Singapore, both the classic full black and solid gray are priced the same. If you are opting for the black and are passing the Frankfurt airport (see my recent post on this) you can purchase it there at a 10% better price. It's interesting that if you buy the camera alone, the grey in Singapore is priced lower, but in Frankfurt the grey is priced higher! So if you're buying the grey or you are not passing Franfurt, just get the Leica in Singapore.
Choosing between the black and the grey? If you want the classic Leica look, get the monochromatic black. If you want the feel of a Leica special or limited production, get the grey. I like the shiny metal look of the lens against the matte grey body and how it is different from the earlier Leica D Lux models. But note that the small flash that comes with the camera (the flash is no longer built into the camera but it is stronger and gives you more separation from the lens so there is less red eye) is available in black color only, and so it looks a bit off when attached to the gray body. Also the special lens cap that opens up and allows the lens to extend and so the camera can be used without removing the lens cap - is also available in black only. So you don't get a truly "solid grey" look with these attachments. But still, depending on your preference the grey still has a unique appeal.
You can read many detailed reviews on the Leica D Lux Type 109 so I won't get into those. Let me just say that I like the wifi feature where the camera creates its own hotspot that your phone can connect to and automatically transfer photos as Yiu take them. This way, you can review images and videos directly on a larger screen immediately after you take them, then send them off to social media. A great technology solution while getting high-end Leica photography.
I also like the new digital viewfinder that automatically senses when you out your eyes to it, so the review screen can go off automatically or be set to off. A nice advantage when you are travelling and away from a charger.
That's it for now. Congratulations if you are on your way to buying the Tyoe 109. I hope to do so in the not-so-distant-future as well.
Take care!
