Toyota Fortuner 2020 V-model features you will appreciate!

Here are features of the 2020 Toyota Fortuner not highlighted often in brochures or online videos, but you will appreciate. I recently got the Avante Garde Bronze Metallic and thank God for the opportunity and blessing to get another new car.

First, a background. This is my 3rd Toyota Fortuner. I got the Fortuner 3.0L Diesel 4x4 FWD top-of-the-line model in 2006 soon after it first came out. Then I had the 2009 Fortuner 2.7L Gas. So I know the improved diesel engine performance and handling. I’ve also had the 2003 Honda CRV 2.0L gas. And by God’s grace and blessing a string of brand new cars: Toyota Corollas - several generations as they came out, a Toyota Revo, a Nissan Sentra, a brand new BMW 318d in 2013, and a Toyota Rush in 2018. Yes, I've had a strong bias towards Toyota, but it’s because I’ve enjoyed the performance, comfort, reliability and ease of ownership through the years. After many hours of studying and watching reviews and comparing vehicle specs, I decided on the 2020 Fortuner V Diesel, and I’m very happy with the choice.
Here are 9 features you will be happy to note in the new 2020 Toyota Fortuner V model.
1. Follow-me-home lights. These are intended to light up your path in a dark garage or when outdoors.  You can activate the headlights to stay on for 30 seconds even after you’re turned off the engine and locked the car (by the way, I still call the Fortuner SUV a “car” for easy reference). This feature has long been a staple for BMW, although in the BMW you can set the time for 30 seconds up to 2 minutes. Also in the BMW, you are assured that it won’t cause battery drain as the lights will automatically cut when needed as the car always ensures it keeps sufficient charge to start the car. I haven’t studied the Fortuner manual in detail yet, but I’m anticipating it has a similar feature. Also, the LED headlights are less of a battery drain compared to halogen lights. The lights are auto-leveling which is useful when going on long journeys and the load of the car changes, as well as automatic-on when it gets dark or when going though tunnels.

2. Inside door safety lights. These give added visibility when a door is opened, and therefore increase safety for passengers getting out or going into the car. The lights are on the bottom of all 4 side doors, and automatically light up when the door is opened. They also show the passenger what they are stepping on when they get off the car.

3. Pre-installed back-up camera at the price of P15k. Yes, it’s an add-on. It’s not super needed in my opinion as the sensors are more vital alerts, and I still recommend to face the rear when backing up - for greater peripheral vision, but since most new cars have it you have the option to have it pre-installed by Toyota for a polished set-up. No qualms. The camera output has guidelines showing the distances of 0.5m and 1m.

4. Concentrate while backing up. The camera when installed by Toyota, is linked to the touchscreen, and the volume of your radio or CarPlay media automatically goes down when you go into reverse. This is to allow you to concentrate and not get distracted when backing up, long a feature advertised by Volvo cars for safety.

5. Open the driver’s door immediately after closing the engine. No need to press the door unlock button. Opening the door lever automatically unlocks and opens the door. I like it that the doors don’t all unlock automatically when the engine is stopped. That’s a safety risk in my opinion. In the BMW, you have to “open” the door handle twice when coming from a locked position, as an added safety feature. But maybe with the Fortuner I’ll add a further commentary when I read the manual but I already like it as it is.

6. All windows are one-touch open and close. Not just the driver’s window, all windows.

7. Lock and unlock all doors from the rear hatch. The button to open the rear door also acts as a SmartEntry button.

8. Puddle lamps. Available from the bottom of the side view mirrors. These provide light to where you are stepping before going into the car. Hopefully to avoid getting mud on your shoes and tracking them into the car. They’re bright enough to be useful when outdoors or on dark streets.

9. Lane change signal indicator. Moving the left turn / right turn signal shifter only slightly, before it clicks in place, will activate the turning lights for 3 seconds. This is a good feature for declaring your intention to change lanes to other drivers. This is a BMW feature; and another nice addition to the Fortuner.

That’s it for now. Hopefully these features give you added appreciation of the Toyota Fortuner 2020 V-model. If this has helped you decide to purchase, do comment and let me know and I’d love to hear about it.
If you have other new features to share that I haven’t touched on, please write them on the comments.

Safe driving!
