A sling bag or crossbody bag is smaller than a backpack but carries with the same convenience, can be about the same as a messenger bag or smaller, and will carry your mens essential urban gear. Basically you can comfortably wear it, then forget about it. It won’t tend to fall off your shoulder like a messenger bag unless you carry the latter in crossbody fashion. So - this bag can help you keep your back and shoulders straight. And specially if you still carry a thick wallet in your back pocket (not good for your spine as it gives you an unbalanced, unsymmetrical sitting position), the sling could help you lighten that load. But enough of the justification, maybe you just want a more contemporary all day carry, and something not so big. Here are the best options today.
First up is this Tumi Kelly Sling in Ballistic nylon in blue comouflage color from the Aplha Bravo collection.
This is quite a hefty size sling bag. Quite good. Specially at the current special sale price of SGD 294. The proportions and the arrangement of the zippers however, make me think of this more as a belt bag than a sling. It’s like a converted sling bag, to me a bit forced for my personal preference. But if you like the size, this could be good for you. Tumi is known for sturdy travel bags, very reliable, and this is no exception. Built like a tank! With lots of pockets and multiple functional extras!
Good news - just out this week is a solid blue nylon color at SGD 225! This is the best priced sling bag today.
The classic black with a generous leather front is at SGD 490.
Next is this Bally Fuston in black nylon.
The size and proportion are better than the Tumi Kelly in my opinion. And as Bally typically is - this comes through as more fashionable, has more finesse, with a price tag that goes along with that styling. At SGD 880, it’s quite a hefty price for a sling (you can get a Bally full size backpack on special sale prices now, at this range!). There is also the added top handle for easy carry when needed.
The top opening is the classic bag design, and quite easy to use. If you’re keen on this bag, consider getting it from Marina Bay Sands where they will offer a 10% discount for Sands Rewards members. This makes it better value!
There are other Bally sling bags on sale like the Sihorn and the Tanis both at SGD 474, but i don’t care much about the styling of these, nor the model names, so I’ll pass on further reviewing them. Check the Bally website if you’d like to consider them.
Let’s now look at this Coach sling in leather with classic Coach canvas in black and gray.
This is quite tastefully done. The bag proportion and zipper arrangement are more akin to the Bally Fuston, and more of a classic styling. I have to say though, with the sturdy leather selected for this sling the main zipper is a bit difficult to operate.
The front pocket also feels a bit tight to use. The zipper in front also sits a bit awkward. It’s on a 50% sale price though, so at SGD 355, this is a an option worth considering.
Now we come to the Tumi Gregory Sling from the Harrison collection. It’s available in this gray nylon color that blends into black at the bottom.
The material is softer than the Kelly Sling, so it feels more urban, has more of that sleek city feel whereas the Kelly feels like you’re out to hit a trail. The size and proportions are also better, more suited as a sling bag, and the zipper configuration is more contemporary. It feels better designed overall. The gray color is on a special sale at SGD 354, while the classic black nylon is at the regular price of SGD 550. And just this week, a full black leather Gregory Sling version came out at SGD 690. There was also a Tumi Asia Pacific limited edition black nylon with a playful flowery & leafy reflectorized pattern that went all the way down to SGD 295! The last few pieces were sold last week, so great if you were able to catch this special price.
The interior lining of this limited edition is olive green with reflectorized ribbing, very nice. I like these inner linings that are not black as it is easier to see your gadgets inside the bag
The pockets are interior are very functional. And as with most Tumi bags, there is a tasteful blend of genuine leather providing a more classy feel.
So looking at these options - if you got the Tumi Gregory Sling limited edition, that would be the best, or the Tumi in gray nylon. But the Kelly in blue ballistic nylon also has a compelling price today. Check out what you really want and what fits your need.
